The Legend of a Dragon on the Roof

Casa Batlló is more than a building; it's a story in stone, glass, and ceramic. The most popular interpretation of its fantastical design is the legend of Saint George (Sant Jordi), the patron saint of Catalonia. The spectacular rooftop, with its iridescent, scale-like tiles, represents the back of the dragon slain by the knight.

The tower topped with a four-armed cross symbolizes Saint George's lance plunged into the beast. Below, the skeletal balconies are said to be the skulls and bones of the dragon's victims, while the flower-shaped balcony on the top floor represents the princess's balcony. Gaudí masterfully wove this epic tale into the very fabric of the building, creating a timeless masterpiece that continues to ignite the imagination of all who see it.
